Asian Americans face rise in racist incidents ● CBS News Report

This CBS News report is one of many that displayed racist attacks toward Asian Americans within the past few years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this was one of many reports I have seen that highlighted this issue, showing the hurtful discrimination many Asians endured while being out in public. At the time of publishing of the video, there "has been more than an 800% increase in racist incidents against Asian Americans reported in the last three years" (CBS). Through this coverage of these attacks, one can see the unconcealed prejudice that continues to affect Asian Americans today, which is an essential consequence of the discrimination circulating within the United States. By including this report, I hope to expand the notion of Asian racism pertaining only through exclusionary practices but via confrontational methods as well.

An unfortunate aspect of the common experience of racism is the frequent encounter with aggressive or callous individuals. This news report brings this different idea to the blog while highlight specific examples of the effects of racism Asians undergo while navigating through their lives. Victor Yang elaborates upon the anxiety or fears many feel due to a recent increase in animosity toward Asians: "I don't think that there had ever been a time where I was scared or fearful of my life because of my race" (CBS). Sophia Nguyen also mentions a similar sentiment in her TED Talk, and this news report magnifies the concern by showcasing a plethora of documented primary encounters in a unique way. The importance of perspective-based sources is how they facilitate empathy through a connection a viewer may feel by witnessing the event on the side of a victim. Through the sharing of instances of these victims, awareness can spread, and acknowledgment of the issue may increase, assisting in the improvement of racism toward Asian Americans.
